A fundraising variety show takes place at Clacton’s Princes Theatre this weekend in aid of a youth theatre trip to Germany.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the twinning of Clacton and Biberach in Germany, and for 20 years a youth theatre programme has run between the two towns.

In September a contingent from The Juks, a youth theatre group in Biberach (pictured), will visit Clacton and perform their latest show – while in October a return group of 10 young performers from Clacton will visit Germany to perform the rock musical Godspell.

Auditions for parts in the newly revised funky show are open to all performers aged over-14, and take place on 30 June between 1-4pm at the Princes Theatre in Station Road, Clacton. There is no need to book, just turn up on the day.

To generate money for the trip, which costs around £15,000 to stage, a variety performance called Youth Takes A Bow is being held to raise funds.

Youth Takes A Bow takes place at 7.30pm on Sunday, 16 June, with performances from community theatrical groups in and around Clacton – Dance House, MAD About Theatre, Stagestruck Academy, Princes Youth Theatre and the Westcliff Youth Theatre.

All are coming together to raise money for the German trip with an evening of singing, dancing and drama across a whole plethora of genres.

Melissa Wenn, who runs the Princes Youth Theatre, said the trip to Biberach was always an incredible experience for the young people who go.

“The show is staged in the Stadthall Theatre, which has recently been refurbished and has incredible facilities, and is always packed out – the young performers are treated like celebrities, people want their autographs, and they’re made to feel really special,” she said.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, in terms of performance as well as to gain an understanding of another country and culture.

“Our young performers become ambassadors for Clacton and build friendships between our town and our twin.”

During previous visits the Clacton troupe have performed Footloose, Legally Blonde and We Will Rock You among others.

Tickets for Youth Takes A Bow can be bought at the Princes Theatre Box Office on 01255 686633 or online at
