Tendring District Council (TDC) has won a national HR award.
The PPMA (Public Services People Managers’ Association) covers local and central government, as well as a range of other departments such as the Bank of England and Ombudsmen.
TDC was a finalist in three categories at this year’s Excellence in People Management Awards: Best Apprenticeship Provider Award, for Career Track; Best Employer and Trade Union Partnership for the relationship with UNISON; and Best Mental Health Initiative for work on primary school wellbeing initiatives.
Following a virtual awards ceremony, TDC was announced as the winner in the Best Employer and Trade Union Partnership award.

In its entry, the relationship was described as “two sides of the same coin”, looking to achieve ‘win-win’ situations. UNISON branch chairman Tommy Draper was recognised as providing practical solutions to issues raised and praised for support of staff; with other union members drafted in to help out at times of peak workload, meaning any changes or workplace issues could be quickly resolved.
Jayne Chapman, who chairs TDC’s Human Resources and Council Tax Committee, said the win was well-deserved.
“In each of the categories we have demonstrated excellent work which we should be pleased with, from developing our apprentices to our work in the community,” Councillor Chapman said.
“Our strong relationship with the union means we are able to engage with our staff well and get things done efficiently and effectively, bringing employees along on the journey with us.”
Mr Draper said: “I have worked as UNISON Chairman now for more than three years and the partnership created over that time has grown and grown.
“My role allows me to work closely with many members of the HR team, not just the HR Manager, allowing UNISON and TDC to deal with any queries or issues more quickly and effectively for our staff and members.”
Councillor Neil Stock OBE, TDC Leader, added: “I am particularly proud we were finalists for three different awards, showing that our work in HR can compete across the board; and compared to large organisations such as the Bank of England and the Civil Service.
“This is an achievement to be immensely proud of.”
