Cabinet halts £90,000 town square scheme

A £90,000 scheme for Walton’s Millennium Square has been halted following concerns being raised by residents.

A total of 75 residents signed a petition objecting to the initiative for the site in the town’s High Street.

Walton resident Brian Green, who handed in the petition at Friday’s (Nov 10) meeting of Tendring District Council’s (TDC) Cabinet, explained to Members that they thought the scheme was not right for them.

TDC’s Cabinet originally agreed in principle to the project at a meeting in July.

The scheme included a public area in the heart of the town centre and options for year round outdoor market pitches.

However, having listened to the points put forward by local people it was decided that the proposals should be halted.

Neil Stock, Leader of TDC, said: “It may seem that there are a relatively small number of names on the petition but I have also listened to similar views expressed elsewhere.

“So we are quite happy to take people’s opinions on board and go no further with the plans.”
