Proposals to build 300 homes in Dovercourt have been deferred by Tendring District Council (TDC) while more information is sought.
The Planning Committee last night put off ruling on outline plans for the houses, along with open space, footpaths and children’s play area, on land off Low Road and with two access roads.
Councillors heard that although the land earmarked for development lay outside the existing Local Plan area for housebuilding, it is specifically included in the new Draft Local Plan.
Concerns had been raised by local residents and parish and town councils about the scheme, including the ability of roads in the area to cope and a lack of employment.
The committee requested that officers look at other options for access, including the possibility of a roundabout, before the application came back before councillors.
Officers will also examine the issue of potential war graves next to the site.
