District and Parish Elections 2019 – Information for Candidates and Agents

The next elections of all Councillors on Tendring District Council will take place on Thursday 2 May 2019. The District Council elections will be combined with the Parish Council elections.

Following a review of District wards in 2017, the District is divided into 32 wards. Details of the new ward boundaries and polling places throughout the District are available to view on our polling review page.

Ian Davidson is the Returning Officer (RO) for the Tendring District Council elections and Parish Council elections within the Tendring District. The RO for the District Council and Parish Council Elections is responsible for receiving nominations, the production of ballot papers, the dispatch of postal votes, for the provision, staffing and equipping of polling stations, the verification and counting of the votes and the declaration of results. 

The Returning Officer for the District Council and Parish Council Elections is responsible for nominations, the production of ballot papers, the counting of the votes and the declaration of results.  The (Acting) Returning Officer for the relevant constituency is responsible for the provision, staffing and equipping of polling stations and the verification of ballot papers.      

District Council Elections

Important information and guidance for candidates considering standing for election is available on the Electoral Commission’s website. We recommend that all prospective candidates read that information and seek guidance if they are unsure on any aspect of it.

A briefing by the Returning Officer and his staff for Agents and Candidates was held at the Town Hall, Clacton-on-Sea on Tuesday 26 February 2019 at 2.30pm. 

Nominations

Candidates wishing to stand for election are required to submit nomination papers to the Returning Officer during the official nomination period before the election.

Nomination papers are available to download from the Useful Documents section on this page. Paper forms are available from our office, please email Electoral Services or call on 01255 686566.

The period for receipt of nominations will commence at 8.45am on Wednesday 20 March 2019. All prospective candidates who want to stand for election must formally submit their nomination by 4pm on Wednesday 3 April 2019.

Please note the nomination form and consent to nomination must be submitted by hand and cannot be submitted by post, fax, email or other electronic means. The Returning Officer strongly recommends that Candidates and Agents refer to the Electoral Commission’s guidance before completing the nomination paperwork.

We are offering an appointment system between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday, from 20 March 2019 to 3 April 2019, when you can have an informal check prior to formal submission of your nomination papers.

Verification of and Count

The verification and Count for all District wards will be held at Clacton Leisure Centre, Vista Road, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex CO15 6DB as soon as practicable after the close of poll on 2 May 2019.

The ballots papers for all contested Parish Council elections will also be verified after the close of poll on 2 May 2019. The count of Parish ballots papers will be held at the Clacton Leisure Centre, Vista Road, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex CO15 6DB at midday on Friday 3 May 2019.

Please note that attendance at the Verifications and Counts will be via admission ticket from the Returning Officer only.
