Important information for credit card users
Under EU directive, from 13 January 2018 the Council cannot charge a surcharge for payment by credit card. However, due to a software issue we are unable to make the necessary changes to prevent the surcharge from being taken at present on council tax, non-domestic rates, housing rents, penalty charge notices and housing benefit overpayments. Therefore, we would ask that you do not make a payment of these bills by credit card. If the payment is urgent, please contact the department that has sent you the bill to discuss. We apologise for any inconvenience. The system is being revised and you should be able to pay these bills by credit card soon without any surcharge.
To make a payment using the Council's Automated Telephone Payments Service, please telephone:
0800 678 3046
We accept most major credit or debit cards (not Diners Card or American Express), for the following services:
- Council Tax
- National Non Domestic Rates (Business Rates)
- Parking Penalty Charge Notice (Parking Fine/Parking Tickets in car parks)
- Council House Rents
- Housing Benefits Overpayments
- Fixed Penalty Notice
- Any other invoice sent to you by the Council - for example garden waste, beach huts, licensing, Careline, service charges on sold flats, insurance premium, dog warden charges, etc
Please make sure you have the bills/parking ticket you want to pay, and your credit or debit card to hand as you will need to provide information e.g. your account number for a Council Tax payment.
Data provided when using these systems is certified completely secure and confidential and your details will not be used for any other purpose. If you have not paid this way before you may wish to read the information here: Secure Online Internet Payments information
These systems are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
If you are in a public place when making an online or automated telephone payment we strongly advise you to make sure you are not overlooked as you enter your details to prevent them from being misused by somebody else.
When making a payment using the automated telephone payment method you will be given a receipt number to confirm that your payment has been made. Please keep a record of this number as it is proof of payment.
When making a payment using the online payment method you will be given the option to print a receipt or have one e-mailed to you, which we recommend you keep as proof of payment.
Both the Automated Telephone Payment service and the Internet Payment Service provide details of telephone numbers in the event of a query or problem. In addition, the Internet Payment Service also provides a contact email address.
In order to guard against card fraud and to ensure that customers' card payments are taken in the most secure environment, regular maintenance is carried out on the Council's Automated Telephone Payments and Secure Internet Payments services. This maintenance is carried out at a time when it is least disruptive to customers.
Tendring District Council no longer deal with on street parking enforcement. This function has been taken over by Colchester Borough Council under a new North Essex Parking Partnership. If you wish to pay an on-street parking fine please go to the North Essex area of www.parkingpartnership.org or call 01206 282316.
