The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018 require that anyone keeping or training animals for exhibition must be licenced by the local authority.
The Regulations cover the use of animals exhibited for entertainment or educational purposes. This includes mobile animal exhibits that visit schools, weddings, private parties, fairs and other events where an audience is present, pony parties where the ponies are not ridden, exhibiting animals via electronic media and domestic animals exhibited in a circus.
The guidance notes for conditions for keeping or training animals for exhibition document sets out all of the licencing conditions that need to be complied with in order for a licence to be granted.
Anyone exhibiting animals in the Tendring area, but living outside, should also register with their own authority.
Applications for a licence to keep or train animals for exhibition can be made using the form below. Completed forms should be sent to the address at the bottom of this page.
Licences are granted for a period of 3 years and are excluded from the star-rating system applied to other animal activities licences.
This application is subject to tacit approval under the European Union Services Directive. Applications are usually dealt with within 35 days of receipt of a full application. In exceptional circumstances the deadline may be required to be extended, you will be notified of the new deadline and the reason for extending it.
