More than a dozen youngsters went along to a gymnastics taster session as part of the summer holiday activities being arranged at Tendring’s leisure facilities.

They got the chance to try out a wide range of equipment and see if they would like to take up the sport on a regular basis.

Tendring Gymnastics operates out of Clacton Leisure Centre every Saturday morning for those aged from five up to 16.

Coach Angie Shaw said the taster session went really well and she hoped that some may be potential members.

“We run the group for a number of different age groups for five and a half hours every Saturday and have built up the facility over the years,” she added. “We started with just a few mats and it has really taken off.”

The session was part of a full programme lined-up for those aged from three upwards and will run throughout the school summer holidays.

A range of both indoor and outdoor sessions has been organised by Tendring District Council (TDC) sites in Clacton, Brightlingsea, Dovercourt, Frinton and Walton, Harwich and Manningtree.

Sports include football, tennis, gymnastics, basketball, squash, netball, cricket fun, cheerleading, short swimming courses, street dancing, roller disco, tennis, trampolining, sticky archery, wall climbing, handball and karate.

Swimming pools at Clacton, Dovercourt, Frinton and Walton and the outdoor pool at Brightlingsea will also have their own activities.

Mick Skeels, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Tourism, said it is an opportunity for youngsters to take part in their favourite sports - or to discover new ones, enjoy themselves and make new friends.

He praised staff for their efforts to come up with a wide variety of activities each holiday.

“There is always definitely something to suit all tastes and ages and it is no different this summer,” he said. “We are keen to promote healthier lifestyles and wellbeing and this is just one of the ways we can achieve that goal.”

In many cases you only have to turn up at the right facility and register. However, some sessions have a limited capacity so it is best to book in advance.

Full details of all the activities, venues, costs and timings are available from TDC’s centres and on TDC’s website, www.tendringdc.gov.uk
