General Information

Tendring District Council own 38 beach huts / chalets and 2995 beach hut sites in the following locations:-

Clacton on Sea, Holland on Sea, Walton on Naze, Frinton on Sea, Brightlingsea, Dovercourt, Harwich

There are some additional hut sites at Brightlingsea that are managed by Brightlingsea Town Council and some at Walton on Naze owned by the Walton Pier Company.

The Council does not own any beach huts, they are owned by individuals and organisations, including charity groups, who pay an annual site licence fee to place their hut on a Council owned site. In addition to the site licence fee the Licensee is required to pay National Non Domestic Rates.

There is currently a long waiting list for beach chalets, however there may be vacant beach hut sites in various locations.

Beach huts can be prone to vandalism and some, due to their location, can suffer winter storm damage. It is therefore advisable that hut owners to insure their huts against such damage and loss of contents.

Huts can be purchased (new or second hand) and placed on site for which a licence has been acquired, alternatively, a hut on an existing site may be purchased from the owner and then a site licence obtained.

Some local estate agents deal with sale of huts, local contractors/builders may supply new huts, and some of the Beach Hut Associations also provide information on the sale of huts.

There are conditions relating to the use of the site and there is also a specification relating to the type of hut that may be placed on a Council owned site.
