In autumn 2010 a bulb planting programme
took place at
Brook Country Park. Four sites across the
park have been transformed into bulb areas, one site is located by
the main car park together with three sites on higher ground across
the south facing side of the park.
Pupils from Great Clacton Church of England Junior School helped
to plant and mulch approximately 8,500 bulbs in October. The bulb
varieties consisted of crocuses, bluebells and snakes head
fritillary.
An additional 44,000 spring flowering daffodil bulbs have also
been planted, covering an area of approx 750 square meters on
higher areas of the park.
The bulbs will give colourful spring displays and help to
naturalise the park. The bulb areas will also help to attract
butterflies and other insects into the park and the nectar produced
by the flowers will provide an important food source for insects
such as bees during early spring. Flowers will appear in late March
- early April, however this will depend on the weather conditions
at the time.
