Brown Tail Moth

The caterpillars of the Brown tailed moths are found in hedgerows and many trees. They can be identified as being an orangey-brown colour with a dotted white line on each side of their back. There are two bright red dots near the "tail" and they are covered by fine, reddish brown hairs. These hairs if touched will cause considerable irritation to the skin which can develop into a rash. These pests can be found all over the District area. The infestations can be controlled if the tents and twigs to which they are attached are snipped out and disposed of before spring approaches.

Elmbridge Council have produced more detailed information about Brown Tailed Moths which can be viewed here.
