The caterpillars of the Brown tailed moths
are found in hedgerows and many trees. They can be identified as
being an orangey-brown colour with a dotted white line on each side
of their back. There are two bright red dots near the "tail" and
they are covered by fine, reddish brown hairs. These hairs if
touched will cause considerable irritation to the skin which can
develop into a rash. These pests can be found all over the District
area. The infestations can be controlled if the tents and twigs to
which they are attached are snipped out and disposed of before
spring approaches.
