Council Grants and Loans to Help with Repairs to Private Housing

Unfortunately due to a lack of funding from central government we are, for the foreseeable future, unable to offer discretionary grants and loans to assist with repairs to private sector housing and have had to suspend our waiting list.

However if you have a disability, mandatory grants to help provide adaptations to your home are available - for information on the grants available see below, for details of how to apply please see our Disabled Facilities Grants page.

Help for Disabled People

Mandatory grants of up to £25,000 are available to help applicants meet the cost of mandatory disabled facilities work following an Occupational Therapist's assessment.

  • Non-repayable, means tested disabled facilities grants of up to £25,000 to help applicants meet the cost of mandatory disabled facilities work.
  • Means-tested interest free disabled facilities assistance to help applicants meet the cost of discretionary disabled facilities. The amount of money paid will be registered against the property as an interest in the land at HM Land Registry and will be subject to repayment when the home is sold or transferred to another owner.
  • Interest free disabled facilities assistance to help applicants meet their assessed contribution in respect of an application for assistance with the cost of providing disabled facilities. The amount of money paid will be registered against the property as an interest in the land at HM Land Registry and will be subject to repayment when the home is sold or transferred to another owner.

Electrical Safety Grants

The Electrical Safety Council give grants of up to £800 to elderly homeowners in receipt of benefits to help with electrical works. They arrange for a registered electrician to do a full test and inspection of the electrical installation and arrange for any items to be remedied. To be eligible for a grant you must be:

  • The homeowner or the property (and reside in) to which the grant has been applied for;
  • aged 60 or over; and
