Homelessness and the Housing Act 1996
(as amended by the Homelessness Act 2002)

Local Authorities' duties towards homeless persons are outlined in Part VII Housing Act 1996. Important changes to this legislation were brought in by the Homelessness Act 2002 and the Homelessness (Priority Need for Accommodation Order) 2002 which came into effect from 31st July 2002.

The information pages to the left provide important information to homeless persons or those threatened with homelessness as a result of the changes brought about by the new legislation.

If you are homeless or think you may become homeless, you can make an appointment to see a homelessness officer by telephoning 01255 686498.

If you want to make an enquiry by phone please telephone 686438, 686445 or 686444. You can also contact Housing Services by e-mailing housing.services@tendringdc.gov.uk.

You could also go see our Homelessness Strategy (pdf document) which provides a baseline assessment of our current position in relation to homelessness and sets out a way forward for the future. It also details how we will ensure that services develop in line with needs and aspirations of local people.

If you require help or advice from other organisations other than the Council, further information is given in these pages.
