Our Allocation Scheme sets out the Council's arrangements for
allocating housing accommodation within the meaning of Part 6 of
the Housing Act 1996.
The aims of the Allocation Scheme are as follows: -
- To meet the Council's statutory duties in allocating Council
housing and making nominations to housing associations and other
councils (contained in Part 6 of the Housing Act 1996, as amended
by the Homelessness Act 2002).
- To determine housing need priorities in an equitable,
accountable and non-discriminatory way and to allocate social
housing to those eligible persons in greatest housing need.
- To allow opportunities for mobility amongst tenants of social
housing (i.e. council and housing association tenants) by promoting
transfers and exchanges that ensure the best use of the district's
affordable housing stock in terms of size, location, physical
characteristics, social characteristics and amenities.
- To help build and sustain diverse and balanced
communities.
- To create access to support services to sustain tenancies for
vulnerable people and prevent homelessness.
- To contribute to the speedy allocation of properties and to
make efficient use of housing resources including making the best
use of adapted properties for the disabled.
- To provide accommodation for homeless households.
- To work with other providers and other agencies to make best
use of affordable housing from all sources to meet housing
need.
