Prevention

We want to prevent crime and anti social behaviour by carrying out improvement schemes. We also want to contribute using existing and implement new measures and policies that will help reduce, prevent and deter the opportunity for and incidence of crime and anti social behaviour in our homes and on our estates.

To achieve this, we will:

  • Continue to undertake an annual programme of improvement schemes to the housing stock to design out crime and create safer, more pleasant communities;

  • Continue a policy of interviewing new tenants to communicate what is considered to be acceptable behaviour, identify their rights and responsibilities and to welcome them to their new home, provide useful and relevant information about local services and the conduct of their tenancy;

  • Instigate a procedure to receive, record, investigate, respond to and monitor complaints of nuisance and antisocial behaviour that incorporates, develops and fully utilises the administrative post and the computerised recording and management system;

  • Improve the cleanliness and appearance of communal and estate areas;

  • Promote and identify funding for the provision of services for children and young people;

  • Seek to link environmental improvement schemes with renaming areas that have been stigmatised by anti social behaviour;

  • Set up a dedicated budget within the housing revenue account to support and identify expenditure on tackling anti social behaviour and identify the cost of vandalism and mis-use;

  • Taking more effective action to safeguard Council Officers and Elected Members against actual or threatened violence, abuse or harassment;

  • Instigate a package of physical measures that can be offered to protect the homes of tenants acting as witnesses or against other threats or violence including those suffering from domestic violence;

  • Provide an ongoing training programme for staff and tenant panel representatives in tackling anti social behaviour and other related issues.
