As people get older their housing needs may change. To help meet these needs, we have 343 bed-sits, one-bedroom flats and bungalows in sheltered housing schemes across the district. Sheltered housing is generally for people over the state retirement age who are still able to lead an independent life, but would like the security of having a scheme manager on call if they need one. Each bed-sit, flat or bungalow is fitted with an intercom and pull-cord system, and you will also be given an alarm pendant so that you can always contact the scheme manager in an emergency. The charge for this service is included in the weekly rent for each property.

Anyone who is over 60 and wants support in maintaining their independence can apply. In some cases younger people may also qualify. Applicants must be eligible for housing, and will be visited to assess their need for this specialist housing service. Sheltered housing is usually only offered to people who would benefit from having the services of a scheme manager and the other facilities provided. People who are homeless and wish to move into sheltered housing should contact us to discuss their eligibility and application to join the scheme.
