Feeling unwell? Choosing the right route could save you time

If you are suffering with a cold, cough, sore throat or have an injury which is not life-threatening but needs medical attention, think about which service is best for you.

One in four people who go to A&E have minor illnesses or injuries which could be dealt with more quickly at services designed to treat these sorts of ailments. Those attending A&E with minor illness or injury will wait longer as doctors must prioritise life threatening cases.

The fastest way to get treatment for an urgent minor illness or injury is to use one of the following services, which are open every day:

* Walk In Service at North Colchester Healthcare Centre, (open 7am - 10pm) situated only minutes from A&E in Colchester on Turner Road
* Clacton Minor Injuries Unit (open 9am-9pm) at Clacton Hospital, Tower Road, Clacton on Sea, CO15 1LH
* Harwich Minor Injuries Unit (open 9am-5pm) at The Fryatt Hospital, Main Road, Harwich, CO12 4EX

You can drop into any of these services without an appointment. When they are closed you can also contact your GP surgery for your GP out of hours service.

If you're unsure which service is right for you, call NHS Direct 24-hour service 0845 4647

Click here for www.choosetherightroute.co.uk to find out exactly what services each of these centres offer, along with addresses, opening times and more

Please remember that if you have a life-threatening illness or injury you should go straight to A&E or call 999. This includes:

chest pains
shortness of breath
blood loss
Stroke
blacking out (loss of consciousness)
major injury to a limb or other part of your body
a major accident
anything you think might be life-threatening

NHS North East Essex has launched this campaign to make it easier and faster for you to get the treatment you need, and to free up Colchester's A&E department to deal with the most urgent emergency and life-threatening issues.
