RECYCLE WEEKLY - WE DO IN TENDRING

Recycling Collection Arrangements

Tendring operates a weekly collection of recyclables from domestic properties. Recycling is collected on the same day as your household refuse but by a separate vehicle. All properties in Tendring have been supplied with a 55 litre green box to store recyclables. Please leave your recycling and refuse just inside your front boundary - but make two separate piles to prevent confusion when the collections take place.

If you are elderly or disabled and cannot put your recycling on your boundary, we can arrange an assisted collection for you where your recycling will be picked up from a location that is convenient for you, please email wcrusader@tendringdc.gov.uk or telephone the contact number shown at the bottom of the page to arrange this. N.B. an assisted collection service is also available for your household waste.

Alternative collection arrangements are available for certain properties such as blocks of flats and farms. For more details or to arrange a collection, email wcrusader@tendringdc.gov.uk or telephone the contact number at the bottom of this page.

Tendring District Council has signed up to The Waste Collection Commitment.

What can I put out for recycling?

Recycling Box

Yes please:

Paper (including junk mail, paper bags, envelopes, old catalogues and telephone directories)
Card (including cardboard and greetings cards)
Cans (including lager cans and soft drinks cans)
Tins (of all varieties including pet food tins and sardine tins)
Plastic Bottles (plastic drink and milk bottles, cleaning product bottles and shampoo bottles).

There is no need to separate materials but please ensure tins, cans and plastic bottles are rinsed out.

Remove lids from plastic bottles and squash the bottles - you will then get more in your box.

No thanks:

Shredded paper/books
Glass - please deposit glass bottles at a bring bank in the district
Textiles - please deposit these at a bring bank in the district
Aluminium Foil - please wash, squash and place in a can bring bank
Polystyrene - please put this in your domestic refuse or reuse it to aid drainage in the bottom of pot plants.
Other Plastics (plastic bags, yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, film, flower pots).

As a result of the current economic climate recycling companies are tightening up on what they will accept and may refuse a load if it is found to contain contamination. Contamination is anything that you have included in your recycling that is not on the 'Yes please' list above. The recycling collectors will not collect any recycling that includes contaminates. If you receive a card through your door to say that contamination was found in your recycling, please remove the contamination and put your recycling out for collection again the following week.

See here for details of the locations of the Recycling Points in Tendring pdf.

When is my recycling collected?

Please see our refuse and recycling collection days page for details.

What if my green box is not big enough to hold all my recyclables?

Extra recycling boxes are available to be collected from various locations in the district - Recycling Box Collection Points pdf.

What if my recycling is not collected?

Check that you have only placed materials that we collect out for recycling and that they have not been put in black sacks, which will be treated as rubbish. All missed recycling collections should be reported directly to Veolia Environmental Services on 01255 431620 after 3.30pm on the day of collection. These will then be picked up the following working day. You should also ring this number to report missed refuse collections.

What happens to the materials I put out for recycling?

Veolia takes your recycling to a Materials Recovery Facility where the different materials are sorted and sent for recycling. The various plastics are sorted into types and made into a wide range of products including bins, compost bins, patio furniture and even fleece clothing. Paper is pulped and reprocessed to make more paper. Cans are melted down to make more cans, saving energy and raw materials.

Recycling - What else can I do?

  • Check to see where your nearest recycling collection point is and what materials it takes - Recycling Points in Tendring
  • Choose longer life, energy-efficient, refillable and rechargeable products.
  • Start Home Composting
  • Practice saying 'no thank you' when offered a bag or product you don't need.
  • Buy, and use refills wherever and whenever you can.
  • Buy recycled products wherever you can (check the labels).
  • Local schools often use old catalogues, magazines etc. Call the head teacher and enquire.
  • If you think something you have bought is over packaged, write to the manufacturer and ask why!
  • How much waste do you produce, weekly? Set a target to reduce it.
  • If you have to throw something away, squash it as small as you can. Remember, if it takes up less space in your bin, it will take up less space in the landfill site.
  • See our Reduce, Reuse or Recycle page for more ideas.
