New Contracts for Household Waste Collection and Street Cleaning

STREET CLEANSING CONTRACT

The new street cleaning contract commenced on 1 January 2012. The service is provided by Veolia and includes the regular cleaning of all roads, streets and footways, seafronts, housing areas and Council car parks. All litter and dog waste bins will be regularly emptied.

Update as at 7 September 2011

On 7 September 2011 Cabinet approved the recommendations of the Environment Portfolio Holder and awarded the Contracts for both Street Cleansing and Household Waste and Recycling Collection to Veolia ES (UK) Ltd.

The Contracts will be formally awarded after 26 September 2011.

The new Household Waste Collection Service will see the collection of residual waste each week using black sacks, the introduction of a 2nd recycling box for the separate collection of paper and card in one box one week, and cans and plastic bottles on the 2nd week. A weekly food waste collection service will be provided to all residents in the district. New services will be rolled out after the start of the new contract on 1 February 2012. The new service will improve the recycling and composting rate in the district and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

Background Information about the contracts

The new Street Cleansing Service will commence on 1 January 2012 and the Household Waste and Recycling Collection Service on 1 February 2012.

These are major contracts - waste collection and street cleaning - worth a total of more than £69 million.

The household waste and recycling collection contract is for an initial period of seven years with the possibility it can be extended for a further seven years. ( click here to see Notice)

It runs from 1 February 2012 through to 31 January 2026 and is worth more than £48,000,000 over that period.

The second contract involves sweeping and litter picking of roads, streets, footways, beaches, promenades, housing areas and car parks throughout the District. ( click here to see Notice)

This is also for seven years - and can be extended for another seven years - and runs from 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2025.

It is worth more than £21,000,000 over that period.

Both of the contracts are currently delivered by Veolia Environmental Services Ltd.
