The Tendring Design Award

The winner of a prestigious award aimed at raising the overall standard of buildings across Tendring has picked up their much-deserved accolade.

Judges picked out an extension at Romford House, a residential property in Tendring village, as the top property for the Tendring Design Award for 2009.

Representatives of Tendring District Council (TDC) - who organised the scheme - went along to the house to hand over certificates to both the architects and builder.

A plaque to commemorate the success has also been put up at Romford House which will now go forward to the Regional Planning Achievement Awards.

Sarah Candy, Cabinet Member for Planning at TDC, said that the Council's award scheme had been well-received and she was hoping that the initiative would have a positive effect on the quality of design across the District.

"The whole aim of the scheme is to raise the bar and encourage architects and builders to strive for the very best they can achieve - rather than just meet the minimum planning requirements," she said.

"The whole idea is create a legacy for future generations and buildings we can all be proud of."

The judges felt Romford House was "a very fine example of modern contemporary design of a well thought out extension. The attention to detail and build quality was first class."

Certificates were presented by TDC Executive Leader Neil Stock to architects Andrew Claiborne and Karen Sardell and Builders PG Oxley.

Two commended buildings awards went to Esplanade Court at Frinton and Barnets Reach at Walton and both received a certificate.

The awards were first staged in 2007 when the joint winners were the Maltings Development in Manningtree and Bishops Park College. The Martello Tower conversion in Jaywick was highly commended.

"We will be looking forward with interest to see what entries come forward the next time the scheme is staged in 2011," added Cllr Candy.
