Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs) and Other Planning Guidance

Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs)

Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs) were introduced by the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act (2004) and are part of the new Local Development Framework (LDF) system of planning. They amplify policies or proposals contained in the adopted Local Plan (and when prepared - Development Plan Documents (DPDs) that will form part of the LDF) and so should be taken into account when determining planning applications. To date, the Council only has one adopted SPD. Others will appear on this page when prepared.

Supplementary Planning Guidance Documents (SPGs)

The Council can no longer formally prepare Supplementary Planning Guidance documents (SPGs) but can protect existing SPGs that amplify policies or proposals contained in the adopted Local Plan and which do not conflict with other current planning policy. The following remaining SPGs relate to policies in the adopted Local Plan and so should be taken into consideration when determining planning applications.

Supplementary Planning Interim Documents (SPIDs)

Planning guidance prepared to supplement the then draft Local Plan (i.e. before its adoption in December 2007) was referred to as Supplementary Planning Interim Documents (SPIDs). The process of preparing a SPID was similar to the formal SPD preparation process so they carry similar "weight" in the determination of planning applications.

Endorsed Supplementary Guidance

The following documents are endorsed by the Council as 'supplementary guidance', a new category of planning guidance introduced by the amended PPS12 in 2008, and so should be taken into consideration in the determination of planning applications.

It is not proposed to endorse all available supplementary guidance as adequate weight is afforded to relevant documents through PPS12. The Council will only endorse supplementary guidance that specifically amplifies a policy or proposal in the adopted Local Plan (or in a DPD that will form part of the LDF).
