Archaeology and Ancient Monuments

Archaeology

Tendring District contains numerous sites of archaeological and historic importance, which make make an important contribution to the character and quality of both rural and urban environments. These features represent a finite and non-renewable resource that are vulnerable to damage and destruction.

Archaeological remains form the oldest element of our built heritage and are often the only evidence of that part of our history for which no written records exist. The heritage value of these sites should be protected from inappropriate development. Specialist advice on archaeological matters is provided by Essex County Council. 2006 service report from ECC available here

There are many records of known archaeological sites and finds in the District, some of national or regional importance. Essex County Council has details of all Listed Buildings and recorded achaeological sites, including Scheduled monuments, on its website "unlocking Essex's Past" The website can be used by individuals and community groups wishing to researchthe archaeology and history of their area. it is also a useful tool for farmers who are considering applying to one of Defra's agri-environment schemes, which can support the beneficial management of archaeological sites, historic field boundaries and traditional farm buildings.

Scheduled Monuments

Scheduled Monuments (SMs) are structures or other works, either above or below the surface of the land, designated by the Secretary of State and protectedby law as sites of national importance. As important parts of the District's heritage, the Council will seek to protect any Scheduled Monument and its setting from unsuitable or unsympathetic development. Any works to them require the consent of the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

There are currently 27 Scheduled Monuments in the District ranging from Pre-historic crop mark sites to 19th Century coastal forts and lighthouses. Special planning considerations also apply to development proposed in close proximity to a Scheduled Monument.
