Current Coast Protection Work

Queensway Seawall Emergency Works, Holland on Sea

Repair work to the seawall below Queensway, Holland on Sea, commenced on Monday 26th February 2007. This section of wall had suffered damage during the prolonged period of stormy weather experienced in January and the repairs stabilised and reinforced the damaged area.

You can view photographs of the failure and the works carried out by clicking on this link.

The work included:

  • Stabilising the existing structure with piling to pin the existing wall in place
  • Constructing a new steel piled footing and stepped concrete seawall on a new line in front of the existing wall
  • Reconstructing the promenade

The work was completed on 10th August 2007.

This was a challenging project but due to good co-operation and joint working between the contractors J Breheny Contractors Limited from Creeting St Mary, Suffolk, www.breheny.co.uk and Tendring District Council the project has been successfully completed, and we are pleased to say that this section of the Promenade has now re-opened for pedestrian access. If you have any queries regarding access to Beach Huts go to our Beach Hut Information page for contact details.

The section of promenade between Hazlemere Road Car Park and the Esplanade / Kings Parade junction remains closed to all vehicles until further notice, due to its current condition. This work is currently at design stage with an anticipated start on site later in the year. The work will be carried out over a six month period with completion programmed for April 2009.

Extension to Open Stone Asphalt Revetment, West End, Dovercourt

Coast protection works have been completed to reinforce the clay bank around the southern end of the public open space off the end of West End Lane, Dovercourt.

The improvements were necessary as the end of the existing open stone asphalt revetment was suffering erosion and the adjacent clay bank was at risk.

The work consisted of reinforcing approximately 130 metres of the existing clay bank defence with an overlay of open stone asphalt.

The revetment construction commenced on 3rd December 2007 and was completed by the 15th December 2007. A new set of beach access steps will be constructed as soon as practicable after completion of the revetment work.

The project has been managed by Technical and Procurement Services on behalf of the Technical Services Portfolio Holder, and is funded from Tendring District Council's coast protection budget.
