Essex County Council generally provides transport for children to attend school if the school is 2 miles or more from the home or 3 miles or more if the child is aged 8 years and above. The latter applies from the point at which the child starts Year 4 or primary education.

Transport is also provided to the nearest denominational school of the child's faith, again where the distance criteria mentioned above are met. A charge towards the cost of this transport is made where the child is attending a secondary school.
