People in Tendring could be missing out on their right to
vote in the upcoming June elections - without even knowing
it!
That's the message from John Hawkins, Local Electoral
Registration Officer for Tendring District Council (TDC).
As part of national Register to Vote Week from May 4-10, Mr
Hawkins is joining forces with the Electoral Commission to make
sure that nothing comes between residents and their right to
vote.
There are elections on June 4 to Essex County Council and the
European Parliament. If you want to have your say on who represents
you, you need to register to vote by Tuesday May 19. If you're not
registered, then you can't vote.
"We want to make sure that no-one misses out on their right to
take part in these elections just because they aren't registered to
vote," said Mr Hawkins.
"Some people think that you are automatically registered once
you pay council tax, but that isn't the case."
If you're not sure whether you are on the electoral register or
would like to be sent a registration form, contact Judith Raison
TDC's Electoral Services Manager on 01255 686586 or visit
www.aboutmyvote.co.uk,
where you can download a form.
You can also get information about the elections and even visit
a virtual polling station.
Tuesday May 19 is also the deadline to apply for a postal vote
and cancel or request changes to your existing postal vote.
Karen Quaintmere, Head of English Regions at the Electoral
Commission, added that registering to vote is important because it
means you can have a say on the issues that affect you, from the
environment to international trade and transport.
"Even if you're not sure whether you will vote, registering
gives you the choice to do so if you do become inspired by an issue
or party," she said.
