A town's seafront is to get a real splash of colour this
summer with a £10,000 scheme to landscape the area. Tendring
District Council (TDC) is carrying out the work to improve the
environment for both residents and visitors alike.
Council staff have already started the project and it will take
until the middle of May to complete. In all the team will be
putting in between 750 to 1,000 plants along the seafront cliffs as
well as improving the quality of the soil.
Pierre Oxley, TDC's Portfolio Holder for Leisure, said it was an
important scheme and he was delighted that it was now underway.
"Residents living in Dovercourt are very keen to see this
particular area of the town get a facelift and quite frankly I
agree with them," he said. "This matter was brought to us by a
number of councillors representing the area and it was one of their
priorities. The money has been found in the budget and I believe
this programme of work will make a massive difference."
Staff are planting a whole range of plants - however the
emphasis will be on foliage plants rather than floral. "Dovercourt
has a European Blue Flag Beach and has a very important part to
play in the tourist attractions of this District," added Cllr
Oxley.
"We have large cruise ships coming into Harwich with visitors
from all over the world and the cliffs environment can help create
a good impression. It is very much the gateway to Tendring from the
sea."
