Plans are in the pipeline for a new £1 million scheme to
repair sea defences at Holland-on-Sea.
Tendring District Council (TDC) has drawn up a programme of work
for the York Road area.
A project proposal report has been sent to the Environment
Agency, which will be providing the funding the scheme. Its board
will meet to decide whether to give the go ahead next month.
If the Council receives planning permission - as well as the
financial green light from the agency - the aim is to start work at
the end of the summer season.
The initiative will use the same tried and tried process of
repairs currently being carried out less than a mile away in the
Hazelmere Road area of Holland-on-Sea.
This includes replacing the seawall with a new concrete stepped
defence to repel wave erosion.
Harry Shearing, TDC's Portfolio Holder for Technical and
Procurement Services, said the scheme at Hazelmere Road had gone
very well and would be completed during next month.
"We are very happy with the repairs carried out at that site and
now want to use the same design and construction at York Road," he
said.
"After Hazelmere Road, the York Road area was identified as the
next section that needed to be tackled."
Cllr Shearing said the Council was well aware that these repair
works were not the long term solution to dealing with the overall
threat to sea defences in Tendring
TDC would continue to put pressure on the Environment Agency for
a comprehensive programme.
