Cycle enthusiasts are preparing to saddle up for the
return of the Tour de Tendring.
With less than a month to go final preparations are being put
together by Tendring District Council's (TDC) Leisure Services for
the event which is back after a year's absence from the District's
calendar.
The tour - which takes place on June 6, 2009 - attracts cyclists
of all ages, many of whom are raising money for charity.
And there is an interesting French flavour this time around with
a team from the Circus Malabaristas turning up on their stilt bikes
to add to the entertainment.
The Royal British Legion Harwich and Clacton Brass Band will be
performing at the site of the start and finish at Dovercourt
Swimming Pool as part of what promises to be a fun family day
out.
Dream 100 will be there providing live links throughout the day,
there will be a beer tent and a choice of tasty catering. Further
entertainment will be confirmed nearer to the date.
Harwich piper James Cole will get proceedings under way at 8am
when the first participants will head off on the 50 mile route.
There is also a 20 mile course which gets under way at 10am.
The routes cover picturesque areas of Tendring - with perfect
cycling conditions through quiet country roads, low hills and views
of the sea.
TDC is running the event with its partners Essex County Council
and NHS North East Essex.
Councillor Carlo Guglielmi, TDC's Portfolio Holder for Community
Partnerships and Renewal, said that it is great to see that once
again, after missing a year, the Tour de Tendring is back on the
road.
"With the attendance of a French Circus team, the occasion
promises to have a continental festival flavour to be enjoyed by
lots of families of our District," he said.
"And following the heights of our very successful Olympiads last
year, who knows, maybe we can we find similar talent in Tendring? I
hope to see you there on the day!"
There is still plenty of time to sign up and organisers are
particularly looking to increase the number of teams taking
part.
Registration is being handled for the first time by national
organisation, Bike Events.
Anyone wanting to register online can do so at
www.bike-events.com or
they can contact Bike Events on 0845 4601342 for further
details.
Information is also available at Clacton and Harwich Tourist
Information Centres or from TDC's leisure centres.
