A major cash pot of more than £140,000 has been secured
for a programme of development opportunities for District and
Borough Councillors.
Tendring District Council (TDC) has joined forces with
Colchester Borough Council and Ipswich Borough Council to provide
the new initiative for their Members.
The money has come from Building Capacity East - a partnership
set up in 2005 to promote improvement in performance in local
authorities across the Eastern Region.
The joint Member Development project will offer a whole range of
development opportunities for Councillors, such as training courses
and an opportunity to formulate their own individual development
plans.
David Lines, Leader of TDC, welcomed the initiative which he
felt was particularly relevant for new Members - but added that all
would benefit.
"This is a very important programme which will help raise our
own personal standards to improve capacity as the political members
of Tendring District Council, a highly-rated organisation in its
own right," he said.
"In doing so, each and every one of us can contribute to
providing an even better service to the people of our district. For
any successful organisation - public sector or private - it is
critical to keep learning new skills and this funding gives every
Member the chance to up his or her own game."
Cllr Lines thanked TDC's Corporate Governance and Resources
Portfolio Holder Michael Dew and members of the Member Development
Panel for their leadership in this initiative.
He said that the fact the Councillors would be learning
alongside those of Colchester Borough Council and Ipswich Borough
Council and sharing views could only add to the experience.
All political parties at TDC have undertaken a commitment to
signing the East of England Regional Assembly Charter to
demonstrate their commitment to improving performance through the
development of their Elected Members.
The Charter's aims include developing Councillors in order to
achieve the Council's aims and objectives as well as addressing
wider matters to promote work-life balance and
citizenship. |
