Help Combat the Credit Crunch with Real Nappies

Real Nappies can save families money - as well as help the planet.

That's the message from Environment bosses at Tendring District Council (TDC) who are urging parents to convert to the washable variety, rather than use disposables.

It has been estimated that families can save around £500 by choosing real nappies.

A recent Government study also revealed that, if washed correctly, real nappies can be up to 40 per cent better for the environment.

This involves following simple guidelines such as avoiding tumble drying, using A-rated appliances and washing in full loads at no more than 60 degrees.

Michael Talbot, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at TDC, urged parents to think twice before choosing disposables.

"In the current recession it is a case for many families that every penny counts," he said.

"Mums and dads can save a considerable amount of money by opting for washable nappies and those that are thrown away only end up on landfill and cost us all in more ways than one."

Cllr Talbot said the Council was backing the nationwide Real Nappy Campaign and the annual Real Nappy Week - which is now in its 13th year, and runs from April 27 to May 3.
