The top five buildings have been shortlisted for the prestigious
Tendring Design Award 2009.
People sent in their nominations from around the District and
now the final five will go before a panel of judges who will make
their decision as to the winner later this month.
The award - which is staged every other year by Tendring
District Council (TDC) - is up for grabs again after being
presented for the first time in 2007.
It's all about finding the best building in the area -
recognising and rewarding good quality development.
The aim is not to just accept the norm but raise standards and
leave a legacy for the future.
The final five as selected from those nominated are:
Romford House, Tendring
Green Lane, Walton
41 Esplanade Court, Frinton
Lawford Place, Lawford
Beth Chatto Tea Rooms, Elmstead Market
Sarah Candy, Cabinet Member for Planning at TDC, said she fully
supported the award and was encouraged by the list to go before the
judges.
"They will have some difficult choices to make and there are
some strong contenders for the crown this year," she said.
"People have put forward their own personal choice and it is now
down to the panel to identify the very best."
Among the judges are Patricia Gubta (East Regional Office); John
Norman (Director of Campus and Community Development, Suffolk
College); Gil Lewis (Programme Leader for the built environment,
Anglia Ruskin University) and Susan Waldock (Urban Designer, Essex
County Council).
They will also include Cllr Rosemary Heaney (Chairman of TDC's
Development Control Committee); Cllr Vivien Chapman (Vice-Chairman
of the committee) and Graham Thomas (Executive Manager, Planning
Management and Control, TDC).
The winning building will receive a plaque to display on the
property and will also go forward to the Regional Planning
Achievement Award Scheme.
The first joint winners in 2007 were the Maltings Development in
Manningtree and Bishops Park College. The Martello Tower conversion
in Jaywick was highly commended.
