Frinton's golden sands are in great demand! Around 15 sack
loads from the town's beach will be dug up and transported to
London to be used as part of a garden at Chelsea Flower Show 2008 -
after Tendring District Council gave its blessing.
The Good Gifts garden, inspired by 'Memories by the Sea' and
designed by Adam Woolcott, Jonathan Smith and Cormac Conway, is the
third entry by the trio and they are hoping for a third successive
gold.
Committed to using authentic materials and props (the garden
nods towards the 1950s), the boys from Bishops Stortford were in
need of genuine beach sand which wasn't as easy to acquire as
originally anticipated.
However, following a conversation with Tendring Councillor,
Giles Watling, they were put in touch with Tendring District
Council (TDC) - which leases the Frinton Beach from the Crown
Estate - and the wheels were set in motion.
The Environment Agency also gave its backing so the boys are now
confident that they'll be able to collect the sand early next month
- in good time for the show which begins on May 20.
"At one stage it was looking a little doubtful as to whether
we'd be able to use the sand but, after contacting Giles who put us
in touch with TDC, we've managed to rescue the situation." Adam
commented.
He added: "We're very grateful to everyone involved and really
appreciate being given the Council's permission to go ahead."
Cllr Watling said: "I am delighted that Frinton and the District
Council have come to the aid of Adam, Jonathan and Cormac and that
a piece of Frinton will be represented at the show."
Measuring 4.5 metres by 5 metres and edged with authentic
reclaimed groynes covered in barnacles, the Good Gifts garden will
feature a fully working rockpool which will lap back revealing
hidden seashells and limpets! It'll be filled with seaside plants
(such as the broom, wild red fuchsias and delicate purple viper's
bugloss) and the authentic Frinton sands, which will sit alongside
genuine 1950s memorabilia such as a bucket and spade, deckchair and
thermos flask to really set the holiday scene.
Pierre Oxley, Portfolio Holder for Leisure at TDC, said: "The
Council takes great pride in all its beaches which attract
thousands of visitors every year.
"This seemed to be a reasonable request and we were pleased to
be able to help out."
The garden is sponsored by Good Gifts
(www.goodgifts.org) which is
charity organisation that allows people to make ethical gifts
ranging from clean water for a Bangladeshi family to an acre of
green belt land in Britain.
The Chelsea Flower Show at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, London
SW3 runs from May 20 to May 24.
Adam Woolcott, Jon Smith and Cormac Conway are offering to
donate £150 to charity - and have even offered to return the sand
to the beach after the
