Cyclists are rushing to sign up to take part in the Tour
de Tendring.
The event - which is organised and run by Tendring District
Council's Leisure Services (TDC) and its partners Essex County
Council and NHS North East Essex - is making a welcome return.
It is back after an absence of a year from the District's
calendar and there is already a great deal of interest.
The ride will take place on June 6 and registration is being
handled by national organisation, Bike Events for the first
time.
There will be 20 mile and 50 mile routes starting at 8am and
10am with the start and finish being at Dovercourt Swimming
Pool.
Les Double, TDC's Portfolio Holder for Community, Partnerships
and Renewal, said he was delighted that the response to the return
of the event had been encouraging.
"Staff have been taking calls about the Tour de Tendring ever
since we announced that it would be back again this year," he
said.
"The interest has been both from those who have supported the
ride in the past - and from new participants who have heard about
it for the first time. It has certainly helped to work with Bike
Events and be able to reach a wider audience."
Enquiries have come from across the East of England and further
afield.
The routes cover picturesque areas of the District - providing
perfect cycling country with quiet roads, low hills and views of
the sea.
The longer route visits Clacton, St Osyth, and Great Bentley and
then rejoins the shorter route at Great Oakley before the finish
where those taking part can enjoy refreshments and the special
attractions which will be laid on throughout the day.
"Further details concerning the attractions and fun for the all
the family taking place at Dovercourt will be revealed at a later
date," added Cllr Double.
"What is sure is that this will be a great day out for everyone
- those saddling up and those who just want to turn up and make the
most of what will be on offer at the site."
The new-look Tour de Tendring will be supported by Essex County
Council and NHS North East Essex - who have pledged financial
backing for three years through to the Olympics in 2012.
It will be the focal point of a number of initiatives due to
take place this year to raise the overall profile of cycling as
both a sport and way to a healthier lifestyle.
