You don't have to push the boat out to experience the best that France has to offer - as a French festival is heading to a town near you.

There will be a galaxy of the country's food, drink, music and culture on offer as Clacton Town Centre is transformed for a day.

A French Festival of Food is being staged in Clacton on Saturday April 19 and it is expected to pull in crowds of all ages.

The event is being organised by Tendring District Council in partnership with Clacton Chamber of Trade and Tourism and will involve more than 20 stalls being set up around the new town square and both sides of Pier Avenue.

The road will be closed off to all but buses, deliveries and emergency vehicles from 8am to 6pm on the day to help create a special atmosphere and environment for residents and visitors to the area.

Town Centre Manager Joanne Rogers said it was something new for Clacton and had been well-received.

"I have spoken to a number of traders in the shops and they believe it is just what we need," she said.

"There will be a whole host of wares and fares on offer which will help transform Clacton into a French style boulevard on April 19."

TDC's Portfolio Holder for Regeneration Les Double said the Council was pleased to support the initiative.

"I am sure this festival will prove a worthwhile attraction and fill the town centre with the smells and tastes of France," he said. "It can only be good for business for our shops and traders."

There will be a selection of cheeses, olives, charcuterie, patisserie, onions, shallots and garlic. On top of that shoppers will be able to experience Soupe de poisson, confit de canard, honey, brioche and crepes with a host of toppings.

Also on sale will be household wares, French African Crafts, earthenware, leather goods, hand woven baskets, costume jewellery and much more.

Every effort will be made to create a carnival atmosphere - and there's even a chance to practice your French with the stallholders!

Pierre Oxley, Chairman of Clacton Chamber of Trade and Commerce, said the Chamber was delighted the festival was to be held in the town.

"We hope that everyone will give our visitors a special and very warm welcome and that all those who come along will enjoy this new venture," he added.
