Businesses will receive a valuable boost from lessons learnt at
a summit staged in Clacton today (18th October).
That was the positive message from Tendring District Council
(TDC) Leader Neil Stock following the event in the Princes
Theatre.
More than 120 delegates turned up for the half day Social Media
and Broadband Summit which was organised by TDC and sponsored by
Business Link.
Those attending found out how they could benefit from the likes
of Facebook, Twitter and You Tube as a cost effective way of
marketing themselves and getting out to a wider audience.
Christian Bone of Business Link East advised them not to ditch
other methods but to use social media as an easy, quick and
efficient part of an overall business plan which will engage with
all age groups.
Cllr Stock said that he believed the summit had been a rewarding
and valuable experience.
"I was delighted with the turnout - the largest we have had for
a business event so far," he said.
"I learnt a lot myself and hope all those who came will take
away something to raise the profile of their business and hopefully
sell more products.
"Our aim is to make Tendring a more prosperous place."
Annette Thorpe, Regional Partnership Director, BT Group informed
delegates that superfast broadband is on its way to Tendring with
upgraded cabinets installed in the Manningtree exchange.
More will follow for the Clacton, Frinton and Wivenhoe exchanges
over the coming months.
"Decisions are made on viability and they are commercial
decisions; but there is an opportunity to influence the market by
signing up to the service," she said.
The event, with workshops and networking opportunities, included
key speakers Mr Bone (Partnership Director, Business Link East);
Mary Lumkin (People and Behaviours Research Team Leader, BT); Mrs
Thorpe and Philip Wilson (Policy Manager Essex County Council).
There were case studies provided by Sara Foster from Clacton
Factory Outlet and Jane O'Riordan of Jane Hamerton Ltd.
The summit was supported by Essex County Council, Federation of
Small Businesses and BT.
