Residents across Tendring now have the chance to boost recycling
with a new facility to get rid of their waste electrical and
electronic equipment (WEEE).
The first bank of its kind has been installed at the Morrisons
supermarket site in Little Clacton.
Each District across Essex has been given one bank which will
provide a valuable extra waste stream from bring sites.
Tendring District Council (TDC) has worked with waste management
company May Gurney and WEEE recycler Reclaimed Appliances to come
up with the facility.
The bank will accept small electrical appliances from hand held
computer games and electric shavers to larger kitchen appliances
and computers.
There is a regulated opening so that larger items - such as
televisions - cannot be deposited and it will be regularly
emptied.
Nick Turner, TDC's Cabinet Member for the Environment, said it
is important to look at every possible method of increasing
recycling.
"These banks will capture waste and are yet another service for
us in Tendring, supplied at nil cost to the ratepayers. More for
less," he said.
"There is a list of items which can, and cannot, be deposited
and I would ask residents to take note of the guidance. Larger
items should still be taken to recycling centres for household
waste."
A £1 donation is being made to the Rainbow Trust for every tonne
of waste collected throughout Essex.
Items that can be deposited are: shavers, hairdryers, hair
straighteners, toasters, kettles, mobile phones, games consoles,
DVD players, radios, irons, lamps, chargers, computer hard drives,
cameras, power tools, food mixers.
Those that cannot be put in - or left beside - the bank are:
fridges, freezers, televisions, washing machines, tumble driers,
laptops, batteries, light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, vacuum
cleaners, computer monitors and microwaves.
