A new late night SOS facility launched in Clacton has received a
positive response in the town.
Volunteers spoke to a number of people about a range of issues
on Saturday, including alcohol abuse and suicide and also went to
the aid of a man who needed medical treatment.
The facility, which is being run by the Tendring Community
Safety Partnership and drug and alcohol support experts Open Road
with backing from the NHS, set up for the first time on
Saturday.
The aim is to offer support, advice and emergency first aid to
the vulnerable on a night out between 7pm and 3am on a Saturday for
a trial period.
Wayne Powell, the SOS facility co-ordinator who is managing the
service, said it had been a successful launch.
"We were not there as long as we will be in the future but
between 7pm and 12.30am eight people presented themselves to us,"
he said.
"One person who was in Coral's betting shop required medical
treatment and an ambulance was subsequently called. Two people with
suicidal or self-harm thoughts were also talked down and others
were given advice on services available to them."
Volunteers also made the service known to door staff at various
pubs and clubs.
Lynda McWilliams, Tendring District Council's Cabinet Member for
Customer and Central Services, attended the launch and also spoke
to a number of people.
"It appeared to me, and from what I have heard subsequently,
that this new facility was extremely well received and the response
was very positive," she said.
"That goes for the door staff, taxi drivers, businesses that
were open and the police - as well as those who were out on the
town.
"As it becomes established and a regular feature in the town
square I am certain that it will provide a vital additional service
which will help reduce those needing to go to hospital A&E or
in trouble with the police."
The launch was carried out by TDC Chairman Alan Goggin and Sarah
Wright, Chief Executive of Open Road.
Cllr Goggin said that it is important that more volunteers come
forward to help sustain the facility in the long run.
Anyone interested in finding out more about how to get involved
should contact Mr Powell on 01206 369782 or 07553 385600.
Alternatively they can turn up to the SOS facility which will be
in the town square again from 7pm this Saturday until 3am on Sunday
morning, and each week thereafter.
