| Helping Youngsters in Tendring to Focus
on a Positive Future |

Tendring District Council (TDC) is taking part in a new
pilot project aimed at helping primary school children to focus on
a positive future.
Job Jungle provides people with training and skills to visit
schools and act as mentors in a bid to raise attainment and
aspirations.
TDC is working jointly with Coast-ed and Essex County Council on
the scheme which is open to all local employees.
Coast-ed has secured the funding for people to become role models
and go into the schools for four half-day sessions in the summer
term and it is hoped to have enough volunteers to continue in the
autumn.
They will work with teachers on the basic numeracy and literacy
curriculum as well as talking about their job and explaining what
skills they need in their employment.
The pilot will involve three primary schools within the Tendring
District and the idea is to expand it to other schools in the
future.
TDC is looking to provide up to 8 volunteers from across its
departments to help deliver the initiative along with volunteers
from other organisations in the area.
Stephen Mayzes, TDC's Cabinet Member for Tourism and Community
Life, said that getting involved in the project clearly
demonstrates the Council's commitment to skills and
education.
"We are very keen to play our part in encouraging children to raise
their aspirations and it is important to get involved with them
while they are still at primary school," he said.
"It is an opportunity for us to improve the skills base and
knowledge of our staff and contribute towards their professional
development as well as tell the children about the wide range of
services we provide and promote the Council as a career
option."
The free training for the volunteers is due to take place at
Coast-ed's offices in Great Bentley next month.
There are still spaces available and any businesses interested in
joining the scheme should contact Jo Harper from Coast-ed by
calling her on 01206 252481 or by emailing her on
