Moves are under way to clampdown on unlicensed tattooists
throughout Tendring.
Residents are being urged to only visit premises which have been
registered by Tendring District Council (TDC).
And the Council is also calling on people to tell of any
tattooists they are aware of, or have visited, which are operating
without a licence.
The move comes following an increase in reports of unlicensed
tattooists and strong fears of a risk of serious infection or
injury to those who choose to use their services.
Potential infections include HIV, septicaemia and hepatitis as
such premises will not have been visited by a TDC Environmental
Health Officer and there is no guarantee that they comply with
rules regarding cleanliness and sterilisation.
There are numerous fully licensed tattooists within Tendring to
chose from who undergo routine inspections to ensure they meet
byelaws and have adequate sterilisation systems in place.
Nick Turner, TDC's Cabinet Member for the Environment, said that
tattoos have become very popular in recent years and it is vital
that people do not put themselves at risk.
"We are extremely concerned there has been a sharp rise in the
number of reports received by the Council about unlicensed
tattooists operating from their own homes or visiting clients in
their homes," he said.
"If you are aware of any tattooist working from home, or have
had experience of a tattooist who cannot produce their license or
are concerned that you may have been tattooed in unlicensed
premises please let us know.
"Any information you give us will be treated in confidence but
it will allow us to investigate and take action where we find there
is evidence to do so."
An unlicensed tattooist found operating from home faces a fine
of up to £1,000 from the courts.
Anyone with information should contact the Council's Health and
Safety Team on 01255 686767.
