Moves are being taken to close a block of public toilets earlier
than normal following two arson attacks at the site.
Vandals have struck twice at the Cliff Park Toilets in
Dovercourt over the past week.
Each time the arsonists have targeted the block between the
times the cleaners have carried out their last visit of the day and
when the building is locked up for the night.
In a move to deter the vandals Tendring District Council (TDC) has
taken the decision to close the site each day following the final
cleaning by the contractors, Fountain.
The situation will continue to be monitored and the Council will
take further action should the arsons persist.
Nick Turner, TDC's Cabinet Member for the Environment, described
the incidents as "wanton vandalism" and said every effort will be
made to catch those responsible.
"I completely despair when I see facilities provided for the
community damaged in this way," he said.
"I find it hard to understand what pleasure anyone gets from
such actions which cause hundreds of pounds worth of damage and has
to be repaired at cost through the public purse.
"I would ask anyone who has seen anything suspicious at this
site or who knows who is responsible to tell us or the police. It
would be much appreciated and a public service."
The Cliff Park Toilets, which are in a conservation area of the
town, were completed in February 2010 at a cost of £190,000. They
replaced conveniences which were originally built in the 1950s and
were beyond economic repair.
Anyone with information which may help catch the offenders is
asked to contact their local police station or the Council on 01255
686772.
"I sincerely hope that we can bring those responsible before the
courts and see them dealt with," added Cllr Turner.
