CHAIRMAN OF THE COUNCIL 2008 - 2009

Roy was born in Ware in Hertfordshire on 4 May 1927 and was
educated there.
He has been married to Cynthia for 53 years and they have one
son.
Roy worked in a retail store in Ware in 1943, but in 1945 he
joined the Royal Marines. During his time in the Royal Marines, he
served in the Mediterranean, Egypt and Malta. When he was
discharged in 1947 he went back into the retail trade in his own
store.
Roy, Cynthia and their small son moved to Clacton in June 1962.
In 1964 he joined the Eastern Electricity Board, where he worked
for 25 years.
He had always been interested in the local community and became
a Member of the Clacton Urban District Council in 1969 and Tendring
District Council in 1974. He was a County Councillor from 1973 to
1977 and from 1981 to present.
During his time with Eastern Electricity, he was Senior
Industrial and Senior Shop Steward.
His activity in the community is well known, being a member of
the Clacton & District Hospital Services Committee; NE Essex
War Pensions Committee; Colchester Area Social Security Appeals
Tribunal; NE Essex Health Authority; NE Essex Productivity Council;
Clacton Carnival Committee; Essex County Association of Trade
Councils to name but a few, and the Secretary of the Electrical
Trade Union AEEU Clacton Branch and the Secretary of the Clacton
& District Trades Council (for 28 years). He was awarded a TUC
Certificate for Service to the community by the Labour Party
Executive in 1989.
He was a serving Justice of the Peace for 24 years and a
Juveniles Magistrate.
Last year he dealt with 500 letters from members of the public and
gets great satisfaction in being able to help people.
His chosen charities this year will be the Essex Air Ambulance,
Clacton Family Support and Tendring Young Persons Epilepsy
Support.
