From 1 April 2011, Essex County Council will take over responsibility for issuing national bus passes to older and disabled people. Whilst the main features of the passes will not change (continuing the entitlement to free off-peak travel throughout England), residents views are needed about the additional benefits which are currently offered and what are the most important to them.

Residents can take part in the consultation, from 1 July, by visiting www.essex.gov.uk/buspass or calling 0845 743 0430 to request a copy. Residents can also write in with comments to ENCTS Consultation, Essex County Council, County Hall, Chelmsford, CM1 1YY.

The Environment Agency is assessing the designs of two new nuclear reactors and are seeking comments on their views so far, as this can help inform their decision.

The UK needs new and replacement energy infrastructure that can provide secure, reliable, low carbon electricity such as renewable energy sources. The Government says that new nuclear power could also play a vital role and power stations are proposed at Sizewell in Suffolk and Bradwell in Essex.

Power companies will propose new reactor designs and a process called 'Generic Design Assessment', or GDA, allows the Environment Agency to assess them at an early stage in the process and so identify any problems at a time when they can most influence improvements. Two types of reactor are being reviewed - the Westinghouse designed AP1000™ and the Areva/EDF designed UK EPR™, which is proposed at Sizewell.

They are holding a consultation between 28 June and 18 October and you can take part.
