Benefits - Who may or may not qualify to claim?

Anyone can make an application for Housing and/or Council Tax Benefit by completing an application form.

Housing Benefit is an income related benefit. Your income, savings and other persons living at your property will affect how much benefit you will receive.

For instance if you have a non-dependant living with you we may apply a non-dependant deduction.

However if you fall into one of the following categories then you may not be eligible to claim:

  • If you pay rent to a close relative who lives with you
  • If you live in care home, such as a nursing home or elderly residential home.
  • If you rent from a trust and you are the trustee or beneficiary.
  • If the property is rented from a company and you are an employee or a director of the company.
  • If you now rent the property you previously owned in the last 5 years (there are certain circumstances where you can claim).
  • If you are classed as a Person From Abroad
  • If you are a Student, (there are some exceptions where you may claim for help towards your rent. For full-time students paying Council Tax.)
  • If you are exempt from paying Council Tax, but you may still qualify for Housing Benefit.
  • If you are not the liable person to pay Council Tax. but you may still qualify for Housing Benefit..
  • If you are not living in the property, but still liable to pay Council Tax.
