Benefits - What happens if I rent a property from a close relative whom does not live there?


If the relative from whom you rent the property from does not live there, you can claim Housing Benefit provided the tenancy is let on a commercial basis.

Who is classed as a close relative?

A close relative is either of the following:

  • a parent, step-parent or parent-in-law; or
  • a brother or sister; or
  • a son, son-in-law, daughter, daughter-in-law, step-son, step-daughter; or
  • the partner of any of the above

*This also includes half-brothers and sisters, but not step brothers and sisters.
