How much benefit could I get?

The amount of benefit you receive will depend on your personal circumstances, such as :

  • The level of your income and savings
  • The amount that the government says that you need to live on
  • Whether you have any other adults living with you
  • The amount of your Council Tax (where you are the person liable to pay)
  • The amount of your rent
  • Whether you are single
  • Whether you have children;
  • Whether you are over 60; or
  • Whether you have a disability

To see if you could be eligible for Benefit you can use the Benefits Calculator.

Extra Help

This is called a Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP). A DHP is help that may be provided to claimants as extra short-term assistance to cover their top-up of rent and/or Council Tax.

A DHP is normally paid to clients who find themselves unable to pay their rent top-up or Council Tax because of a change to their circumstances. It is not a benefit and each application is decided on individual circumstances. If a DHP is not awarded there is no right to appeal.

To apply for a DHP you need to explain why you cannot pay your top-up and a budget statement needs to be completed. Click here for a budget statement to download, print off, complete and return to us at:
