Benefits - Guide for Owner Occupiers

Council Tax Benefit

You can receive help towards your Council Tax even if you do not receive any other state benefits. It also does not matter if you already receive a discount on your Council Tax, for example if you live alone.

Amount of Benefit Payable

The amount of benefit you receive will depend on your personal circumstances, such as:

  • Whether you share the liability with someone other than your partner
  • The amount of your income and savings
  • The amount that the government says you need to live on
  • Whether you have any other adults living with you
  • The amount of Council Tax (where you are the person liable to pay)

Second Adult Rebate

  • If your income or savings are too high, for you to qualify, you may still be able to claim up to 25% off your Council Tax bill. This may apply if you are the only person liable to pay the bill and there are other adults living with you who are on a low income.

The table below is a general guide to the amount of income that the Second Adult(s) in your property will need to be on to be classed as being on a low income.
