Project Tendring

Project Tendring - the story so far...

At the Council's meeting on 19th February, the Leader of the Council outlined an exciting new approach to regeneration, 'Project Tendring'. It includes not only economic development but also the physical, social and environmental transformation of our district. .

Project Tendring seeks to refresh the Council's approach to regeneration and focus on regeneration outcomes for the District.

At the Council's meeting on 26th March, the Council agreed to establish Tendring Regeneration Ltd, a Local Authority Not for Profit Company, to deliver regeneration projects in the District.

Tendring Regeneration Ltd will be at the leading edge of Project Tendring. It will be local authority "controlled", but arms length from the Council - The main reason for this arms length status is that it will enable the Company to focus on a single-purpose - the delivery of regeneration within the Tendring District under the banner of Project Tendring, and not be distracted by the other business of the Council. It will have freedom to act to achieve regeneration objectives within the remit of its company objects.

Guiding principles for Project Tendring

• Locality based…..

Tendring does not have the same needs throughout the whole district. Project Tendring reflects this. It recognises that the needs of Harwich and the Stour Coast - the north of Tendring - are different from those of Clacton and the coastal towns to the south of the district. In turn, the requirements of both are very different from those of the rural areas inland. And people across the whole district will benefit from a strong collective focus on improved quality of life and participation which makes up the Dynamic Tendring project.

• Whole Council……

The successful regeneration of the district will be achieved more effectively and more quickly if the whole Council unites and works to drive these projects forward for the benefit of the people who live and work in Tendring.

• With partners……

It is quite evident that the regeneration and/or transformation of Tendring is not something the Council can begin to achieve on its own. Working closely with our partners who provide other public services is something we have been doing for some years and we are getting better at it.

• Bringing in finance (and expertise)….

Each of the five projects aims to bring in more money and expertise to Tendring, to benefit the people of Tendring. Experience elsewhere shows this can run into 10's of millions of pounds and perhaps much, much more. We shall work hard to win extra resources for the district, whether through new investment delivering better housing, living environments, town centres and jobs or through targeted grants which need work to develop bids and to then, when successful, to carry out the work.
