Transforming Dovercourt's Appearance
Dovercourt has a long and colourful history but the image of the
town has changed since its heyday as a popular seaside resort and
commercial centre. Now it is time to put Dovercourt back on the map
- to celebrate the past whilst looking towards the future.
We worked with a team of designers to come up with proposals for
improving the town, building on its greatest assets - in
particular, its heritage and attractive seafront through a shared
plan of action and the involvement of the local community.
Dovercourt Rediscovered sets out a new masterplan approach to
guide the transformation of Dovercourt, focusing on the town centre
and adjacent seafront. The proposals have been prepared by Broadway
Malyan on behalf of Tendring District Council, following
consultation with key stakeholders, local residents and businesses
and visitors to the town and demonstrate the commitment of the
Council to promoting the regeneration of the town.
Our vision for Dovercourt is a simple one - to build on its rich
heritage to make it a more attractive place to live, work and
visit: a town with a distinctive character, a lively market and
retail offer, a mix of creative businesses, attractive buildings
and public spaces and good connections to the seafront.
The three main zones of activity are:
- Station Gateway- revitalising the area around the station with
the refurbishment of the station building and a new public space to
create a better gateway to the town and seafront, an improved
transport interchange and a focus for business and leisure;
- High Street- reinvigorating the High Street with new shops,
galleries, cafes and restaurants to create a more diverse retail
offer and attractive pedestrian environment; and
- Seafront - enhancing the seafront gardens and promenade to
encourage more visitors throughout the
year.
