The Offices, Shops and Railway Premises Act 1963
(OSRPA) aims to secure the health, safety and welfare of people
employed to work in offices, shops and certain railway premises.
(Sections 1-3 of the Act define the premises to which the Act
applies.)
If an employer intends to employ anyone to work
in an office or shop, they are required by section 49 of the Act to
notify the appropriate enforcing authority beforehand. They must
provide specific details as laid down in the Notification of
Employment of Persons Order 1964 (SI 1964/533). This is done by
completing form OSR1 and sending two copies to the appropriate
authority as shown on the form.
Failure to comply with this requirement is an
offence.
For more information or for copies of the
relevant forms including guidance on the completion of the forms
please visit the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) web
site.
