As a rule if you work in the food industry, a school or other institutional setting you may return to work 48 hrs after the symptoms (diarrhoea and vomitting) have ceased naturally but you must adhere to strict hand washing routine after visiting the toilet and before handling open foods. The exception to this guidance is any person who has been ill with typhoid or paratyphoid infection which requires microbiological clearance before returning to work.
